About pxicons

pxicons is a browser-based pixel art editor designed for making favicons. It gives you a pixel grid at 16×16, 32×32, 48×48, or 64×64, a real-time size preview panel, and one-click export to PNG or ICO. Nothing is uploaded — the entire tool runs in your browser. Your work is automatically saved to local storage, so you can close the tab and pick up right where you left off.

Favicons are small but high-impact. A well-designed icon helps users identify your site in a tab stack or bookmarks list at a glance. The ICO format lets you bundle multiple sizes into a single file so every browser gets a sharp result — the 16px tab icon, the 32px taskbar pin, and the 48px shortcut icon are all served from one favicon.ico.

Pixel art is the native language of the favicon. At 16 pixels square, there is no room for gradients or photography — only deliberate marks. pxicons gives you the grid, the palette, and the previews so you can see exactly what your icon will look like before you export.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a favicon?
A favicon is the small icon displayed in browser tabs, bookmarks, and the address bar to identify your site. The standard format is ICO, which can contain multiple sizes (16px, 32px, 48px) in a single file.
What formats does pxicons export?
pxicons exports PNG at your drawing resolution and ICO files containing 16×16, 32×32, and 48×48 versions. Use ICO for favicon.ico in your site root; use PNG for <link rel="icon"> tags.
How do I use the fill tool?
Click Fill or press F to activate flood fill. Click any pixel to fill the connected region of the same color. Press F again to return to draw mode.
How do I use the eyedropper?
Click Pick or press I to activate the eyedropper. Click any pixel on the canvas to sample its color as your active drawing color. The eyedropper exits automatically after one pick.
Can I undo mistakes?
Yes. Click Undo or press ⌘Z to step back. ⌘⇧Z redoes. The history holds up to 50 steps.
Does pxicons save my work?
Yes. pxicons automatically saves your drawing to your browser's local storage as you work. Your canvas will be restored the next time you open the page, even after closing the tab or restarting your browser. Changing the grid size starts a fresh canvas.
Is pxicons free?
Yes, completely free. It runs in your browser with no account, no upload, and no server required.
